The air wing shown here includes F-14D Tomcats for fleet air defense, F/A-18C Hornets as multirole aircraft, S-3B Vikings for anti-submarine warfare, EA-6B Prowlers for electronic warfare, E-2C Hawkeyes for airborne warning and control, and A-6 Intruders for long-range strike. Even this 1994 group postdated the RA-5C Vigilante, whose specialized reconnaissance capability appears not to have been fully replaced. The Viking occupied the layer between broad ocean surveillance and close helicopter searches, where even uncertain contacts could build a track over time. The mix gave the carrier several specialized capabilities instead of asking one airframe to cover every mission.
