Once commissioned, Coëtlogon joined a Northern Squadron built around ironclads, a coast-defense ship, an armored cruiser, and protected cruisers. The 1895 maneuvers combined an amphibious assault in Quiberon Bay with blockades of Rochefort and Cherbourg. In 1896 she also served in an enemy squadron alongside a coast-defense ship and the armored cruiser Dupuy de Lôme. She then returned to reserve, where her limited movement reflected persistent engineering weakness rather than simple peacetime economy. A maritime prefect's 1905 assessment warned that the cruiser had always caused problems and that relying on her would be imprudent. She was decommissioned, struck, used briefly as an ammunition-storage hulk, and scrapped in 1906.
