Torpedo boats were designed to attack major ships, then found themselves protecting convoys and fighting other fast boats. Motor gun boats supplied the concentrated firepower for that new contest. Late-war British destroyer and coastal-force flotillas used radio intercepts, German-language expertise, and radar to set night ambushes against raiders heading for convoys. The information need not come from Enigma because ordinary German transmissions could be conspicuous enough for multilingual British personnel to exploit. Reservists who had spent time in Germany and other German speakers could turn those transmissions into location cues before radar guided the final approach.

The gun-boat solution: outfight the raiders
The closing argument ties the MGB’s heavy armament to convoy defence: British forces increasingly used intelligence, radar, and ambush tactics to meet raiding boats before they reached their targets.
