What the loss of IRIS Kharg suggested about damage control

The fire aboard the Iranian fleet support ship Kharg prompts a cautious distinction between successful evacuation and an inability to extinguish a long-running engine-room fire.

Notes

Kharg had served for roughly four decades and evolved from a relatively simple tanker into a helicopter-capable fleet flagship. Reports that the full crew escaped with comparatively few injuries suggested competent evacuation and an awareness of the crew's limits. At the same time, a fire that burned from the morning of 1 June into 2 June before the ship sank raised questions about firefighting systems and the ability to contain an engine-room casualty. The diagnosis remains provisional because a severe fire can defeat even a trained crew.
