Coastal Command at the bottom of Air Ministry priorities

The late-1930s priority order left Coastal Command behind bombers, fighters, and carrier aviation, without an Admiralty constituency pressing its case.

Notes

The late-1930s Air Ministry hierarchy places the bomber force first, with Fighter Command and the Fleet Air Arm competing behind it. Coastal Command sits at the bottom of that order. The Fleet Air Arm at least had the Admiralty pressing the Air Ministry for resources, while maritime patrol lacked a comparable external sponsor. Coastal Command was therefore left asking for equipment inside an institution focused on other ways of fighting. The comparison reinforces the proposal to preserve a naval stake in maritime aviation before priorities hardened.
