Why did Coastal Command not rely on long-endurance airships?
Short answerTheir support infrastructure and the legacy of the Hindenburg disaster were major drawbacks.
NotesLong endurance made airships attractive for maintaining continuous patrol coverage. That advantage did not remove the need for specialised ground infrastructure and a large support organisation. The Hindenburg disaster also shaped public and institutional attitudes toward the type. Coastal Command therefore had to weigh the whole operating system and its risks, not endurance alone.
