Why pairs of defensive systems leave dangerous arcs

The paired defensive mounts prompt a proposal for overlapping arcs and additional redundancy, with the actual positions in the early artwork still uncertain.

Notes

The secondary armament list includes a railgun, two 5-inch guns, and a choice of two 300-kW or two 600-kW lasers. Defensive systems include two RAM launchers, four 30-mm guns, four ODIN lasers, and two counter-uncrewed systems. A pair of mounts can leave a sector uncovered when one fails, is damaged, or is down for maintenance, potentially forcing the ship to turn against a fast incoming threat. Three or four suitably placed mounts can overlap their arcs and preserve coverage after losses. The proposed increase concerns the paired lasers, RAM launchers, and counter-uncrewed systems, with the two main guns explicitly treated differently. Extra RAM launchers are judged a relatively small expense against the hull, while additional lasers could cost more; a mixture of 300-kW and 600-kW units is suggested.
