Mass-built escorts resist tidy class statistics

Hundreds of wartime escorts built across many yards accumulated enough local and crew-made variation to make a single class specification misleading.

Notes

Twenty-seven Tribal-class destroyers offer a relatively consistent design reference beside more than 200 Isles, Dance, Shakespeare, and Tree-class trawlers produced by roughly 40 yards. Neighboring yards sometimes cooperated, but local construction practice still introduced differences across what appeared on paper to be one group of vessels. Reservist crews then made extensive wartime modifications to suit their own ships and duties. A single class specification can therefore hide meaningful differences in equipment, layout, and capability. Broad operational traits are useful in an overview, while exact particulars belong in a ship-specific study.
