A fleet built at wartime speed

Most vessels at Mobile Bay were recent construction, showing how quickly the Civil War created new naval capabilities.

Notes

The battle was fought by a fleet that barely existed a few years earlier, with even the comparatively old Hartford and Brooklyn launched only in 1858. Its operational core included ironclads launched in 1863 and 1864, some not yet a year old. Rapid construction and merchant-ship conversion produced individual yard interpretations of common specifications and vessels that did not always fit neat class labels. This was naval mobilization shaped by immediate operational demand rather than by the settled standards of a peacetime fleet.
