Civil War ironclads and the larger wooden war

Famous ironclad encounters can obscure how much American Civil War naval fighting still depended on wooden and improvised vessels.

Notes

The American Civil War is remembered through famous ironclad battles, although armored ships performed only a small fraction of the total naval work. The estimate given here is perhaps 5 to 10 percent, depending on what counts as an ironclad. Some paddle steamers carried little more than railway iron protecting part of the hull, which makes the category itself uncertain. Those craft could meet an immediate operational need without becoming full ironclads in design or capability. Spectacular new technology can dominate historical memory while ordinary vessels continue carrying most missions.
