Chapter · 6:17-9:32

Escort construction was already under way before the pause

Hunts and Flowers already had orders and building facilities, undermining the case for halting larger warships to make room for them.

Notes

The early Hunt-class destroyers had been ordered in spring 1939, and many were laid down before the wartime construction pause. Further Type II Hunts were ordered on 4 September, still before the pause in this account. Flower-class corvettes and Hunts generally occupied smaller slips, merchant-building facilities, sub-yards, or rented yards. Even where major shipbuilders handled the orders, these escorts usually occupied different facilities from battleships, carriers, and cruisers. Halting the larger hulls therefore did little to release the building spaces the escorts needed.
