Churchill's like-for-like naval procurement logic

Churchill's procurement logic matched carriers with carriers and capital ships with capital ships, while using escorts against submarines.

Notes

Churchill's wartime procurement logic was largely symmetrical: build carriers to counter carriers, capital ships for capital ships, and cruisers for cruisers. The important exception was anti-submarine warfare, where corvettes and Hunt-class escort destroyers answered U-boats rather than copying them. That logic helps explain why the absence of operational German and Italian carriers made British carrier construction easier to pause. An operational Graf Zeppelin would therefore have strengthened the case for keeping British fleet-carrier programmes moving on schedule.
