Force Z: why a small deployment could weaken deterrence

Sending two capital ships to Singapore could reveal Britain's limits after years of promising a major Far Eastern fleet.

Notes

The criticism of Force Z centres on the relationship between the promised fleet and the force actually sent. Two capital ships at Singapore exposed how little Britain could deploy there. Concentrating them with other ships around Ceylon is proposed as a more credible use of the available strength. Older battleships and Hermes could contribute to that concentration. Sending additional ships to Indian yards for maintenance is suggested as another way to build up the force in the region. The answer doubts that such a move could still change Japan's timetable for war, but argues that basing decisions could alter Britain's ability to respond. This is a strategic alternative, not a claim that positioning alone would have prevented war.
