Aircraft design needs accountable tradeoff decisions

See why aircraft design needs an accountable chief designer to choose among imperfect options instead of letting a committee pursue an impossible ideal.

Notes

Aircraft design rarely offers a single best answer; it requires choosing the least damaging compromise among competing requirements. That reality explains the value of a chief designer who owns the final decision. A committee can keep searching for an ideal solution because its members disagree about which disadvantage is acceptable. Collective responsibility can also diffuse blame and weaken the incentive to make a hard choice carefully. The Norway 1940 example warns against assigning a failed campaign entirely to a prime minister or defence minister without examining the cabinet's collective role. The watch point connects technical tradeoffs with the institutional question of who is answerable for them.
