Roughly 3,000 Type 97 Chi-Ha vehicles were produced. Most were the common versions armed with 57 mm or 47 mm guns rather than the more capable late-war designs invoked earlier. The production total therefore did not give Japan thousands of tanks with its newest armament. Counting all variants together can obscure the battlefield quality and gun power of the vehicles actually available.

A follow-up distinguishes total Chi-Ha production from the much smaller number of Japanese tanks carrying the most powerful late-war guns.
