Designing the Chester-class torpedo cruiser

The Chester-class design session shows how hull stability, funnels, armour, armament, and small weight changes constrain a light cruiser's final role.

Notes

A proposed 40-knot modern light cruiser becomes unstable once its funnels are fitted. Machinery and topweight upset a design that appeared sound as a bare hull. Adjustments to hull dimensions, weight balance, armour, secondary-gun range, and torpedo protection eventually produce a workable torpedo cruiser. The game first offers Cardiff as the class name, but the design is renamed Chester in honour of the light cruiser lost earlier in the campaign. Its name ties the new ship to the fleet's recent operational experience.
