Chasseur layout anticipates later destroyers

Voltigeur and Chasseur move machinery forward and torpedo tubes aft while most of the later ships adopt fuel oil.

Notes

The Voltigeur design moved its machinery and funnels forward and shifted the torpedo tubes aft, clearing them from the space between the stacks. That arrangement became characteristic of later destroyers. The succeeding Chasseur class retained a compact 450-ton hull, six 65 mm guns, three 450 mm torpedo tubes, and about 1,500 nautical miles of range at 20 to 21 knots. Most used fuel oil, although Cavalier still burned coal. Layout and fuel could change significantly even while displacement and armament remained familiar.
