Several reconnaissance patrols failed or were withdrawn, yet the gaps were not reported to the commands preparing Operation Fuller. Coastal Command aircrews were not told why their apparently routine ASV radar patrols mattered, and the RAF's separate commands had not coordinated their preparations. The German squadron passed through the resulting holes almost exactly when coverage failed. Naval forces stood down believing surveillance had been maintained, costing destroyers, motor torpedo boats, and Eugene Esmonde's torpedo aircraft their best chance to attack promptly. Reconnaissance creates warning only when failures are communicated to the commanders waiting to act.

Channel Dash: reconnaissance gaps become failure
The Channel Dash exposed how radar failures, unreported patrol gaps, and weak command coordination could prevent naval forces from acting on time.
