The Channel Dash offered British motor torpedo boats the traditional torpedo-boat mission of attacking major enemy warships. They found and reported the German force before the Swordfish, destroyer, and later RAF attacks arrived. Because the targets were valuable enough, crews accepted the unusual risk of charging and launching torpedoes in daylight. The outcome still had strategic ambiguity: German capital ships based in home waters were less dangerous to Atlantic convoys than the same ships on the French coast.
