The Centurion class combined cruising endurance at ten knots with an extensive mixed battery. Ten single 4.7-inch guns supplemented the main weapons, backed by 6-pounder and 3-pounder guns. Seven 18-inch torpedo tubes added another close-range threat. A second-class battleship needed endurance and flexible weapons for distant stations as well as a useful main battery.
