The proposal completes roughly four Centaurs as amphibious assault and command ships. Their comparatively small hulls make an expensive conversion into angled-deck fleet carriers less attractive beside the larger Audacious and Malta classes. Completing them quickly avoids waiting for the full development of jet carrier arrangements. Catapults could be fitted but little used, or the ships could be prepared to receive them later. Helicopter operations give these ships a supporting role alongside the larger strike carriers and the straight-deck Audacious support ships.
