Castellammare linked Bourbon Naples to Fascist shipbuilding

Bande Nere's builder traced its naval-industrial lineage from an eighteenth-century Neapolitan royal dockyard to modern Italian state-supported shipbuilding.

Notes

Unlike the other three Giussanos, Giovanni delle Bande Nere was built at the royal dockyard at Castellammare di Stabia. The yard had been founded under Sir John Acton for Ferdinand IV of Naples and expanded from limited sailing-ship capacity into steam warship construction during the nineteenth century. By the interwar period it depended heavily on government orders and struggled when those orders were insufficient. Its later absorption into larger state-backed industrial groups illustrates the long institutional continuity and financial fragility behind Italian naval construction.
