Chapter · 30:11-36:44

Caspar John makes the case for naval aviation

Caspar John's sequence of carrier, staff, training, and senior-command posts made him a central advocate for a postwar Fleet Air Arm.

Notes

Caspar John's appointments connected wartime carrier experience to postwar aviation policy. He repeatedly returned to Whitehall or served close enough to keep making the Fleet Air Arm's case across changes of government. An anecdote about persuading both the prime minister and the opposition leader illustrates his effort to make policy survive party politics. His support for Eric Brown placed an experienced test pilot near the centre of aircraft development, while his later sponsorship of officers such as Michael Clapp carried aviation expertise into another generation. Advocacy and appointments could matter as much as a promising airframe.
