Carriers make strike reach mobile and hard to pin down

A moving carrier can threaten targets across a wide sea area while counter-reconnaissance denies the enemy the information needed to attack it.

Notes

Carrier aviation's reach cannot be understood from aircraft range on a chart alone. A carrier operating in international waters can provide overwatch, information support, and direct strike power without requiring a base ashore. Combining the ship's movement with aircraft strike radius produces a force that can hit changing target areas while complicating enemy targeting. Shore-based anti-ship ballistic missiles still need a reliable position for a moving target, while reconnaissance satellites enter the same contest because weapons can threaten them as well. The counter-reconnaissance role matters as much as the strike role: the carrier group survives by stopping scouts, submarines, and other sensors from reporting its position.
