Why do most modern non-nuclear aircraft carriers not use thruster pods?
Short answerInstitutional inertia and concern about additional hull depth and draught are suggested as reasons, while more warships could adopt such systems.
NotesInstitutional inertia is offered as part of the explanation for the limited adoption of thruster pods. The design concern is how much deeper their installation would make the hull and how that would affect draught. Those consequences have to be considered for the whole ship. Wider use of such systems aboard warships is considered possible, although the answer does not work through a particular carrier installation.
