French aircraft limits and carrier-system coevolution

France fielded naval aircraft, but its wider aviation industry and carrier systems fell behind the coevolution achieved in Britain.

Notes

France had a naval-aircraft program, but it drew on an aviation industry that was falling behind as a whole. Aéronautique Navale operated land-based aircraft, floatplanes, and navalized types such as the D.373. Carriers and aircraft formed one evolving system. Heavier aircraft required changes to arresting gear, flight decks, handling arrangements, and the flow of technical knowledge from industry. British naval constructors and Third Sea Lords could gather information from firms working on both aircraft and ship equipment. That access helped the Royal Navy develop successive carrier-system generations in the 1920s and 1930s, while France lacked the same carrier numbers, industrial access, and repeated operational experience.
