Liaoning's arrival pushed the PLAN to organize escorts around sustained sea control, with Type 052Cs close to the carrier for air defence. Carrier aircraft weapons can be replenished at sea even when destroyer VLS cells remain difficult to reload. The Type 052D combines an evolved Chinese radar and command system with 64 larger hot-or-cold-launch cells for air-defence, anti-ship, land-attack, and anti-submarine missiles. Its repeatable general-purpose role makes it the PLAN's closest counterpart to the Arleigh Burke family.
