Carriers for reconnaissance and night strikes

British carriers supported reconnaissance, night-fighting doctrine, and attacks on fleets in harbour rather than serving only as defensive fighter platforms.

Notes

Carriers formed part of a wider Royal Navy effort to correct perceived failures from the First World War. The fleet wanted better reconnaissance and practised night fighting because the German fleet had escaped after Jutland. It also developed carrier strike methods against ships sheltering in harbour, a line of thought later demonstrated at Taranto. Interwar British aviation doctrine therefore included offensive fleet-finding and strike roles alongside layered air defence.
