Pacific carrier warfare and the value of range

The Pacific war demonstrates that carrier mobility matters most when aircraft have enough range to choose the time and place of attack.

Notes

Books on Task Force 58 and American carrier development make strike range a central lesson of naval aviation. Pacific carrier aircraft still had useful reach despite their single engines. A mobile carrier can enter range, launch, and withdraw, while a shore base remains fixed and easier to locate. That uncertainty lets the carrier choose the time and place of attack, strike when an opponent is tired or weak, and force the defender to remain alert without knowing where the blow will arrive.
