Pilot pipelines and maintainability shape carrier endurance

Aircraft specifications are only part of the comparison: pilot replacement systems and field maintenance determine how quickly each carrier arm can absorb wartime change.

Notes

Japan's highly proficient but relatively closed carrier air groups differed from British and American systems that rotated experienced pilots back into training. That difference matters when new aircraft arrive during a war, because converting squadrons while sustaining frontline operations is harder without a continuous training pipeline. Japanese conversion remains possible, but the system makes it harder. Attrition would test pilot quality and each navy's ability to turn combat experience into replacement crews and converted squadrons. The Swordfish's exceptional maintainability adds a related advantage when Britain must support carrier aviation from industry on the other side of the world.
