Fleet patrols and a concentrated carrier night strike

In this account of British carrier roles, Illustrious-class ships accompany the fleet and maintain combat air patrols, anti-submarine patrols and reconnaissance. They can also launch strikes while supporting the battle formation. Ark Royal serves as the larger striking asset, holding aircraft ready for a concentrated attack once scouts locate the enemy. The preferred sequence is to track the opposing fleet during daylight and attack at night, when its air defence is expected to be weaker. These complementary roles explain why aircraft numbers alone do not describe the intended work of each carrier.
