Carrier scouting transforms fleet information warfare

Aircraft changed naval scouting by replacing slow, fragmented reports with wider and increasingly immediate observation, while uncrewed scouts may make risky searches more expendable.

Notes

Information gathering, rather than bombing, is presented as one of the carrier's genuinely transformative contributions. Earlier fleets relied on dispersed scout ships, flags, messengers, and delayed reports. Aircraft could search a much larger area and return information directly to the force. Satellites now add global coverage, but predictable orbits, obscurants, and sensor limitations can still create gaps that aircraft must investigate. Uncrewed aircraft may be especially useful in those dangerous searches because losing the machine carries a different political and human cost from losing an aircrew.
