Carrier hangars balance aircraft, stores, and maintenance space

Royal Navy hangar photographs show why theoretical aircraft packing diagrams miss the stores, work access, cranes, and tie-down arrangements needed during a deployment.

Notes

Photographs of a Queen Elizabeth-class hangar show an operational workspace rather than an empty box to be filled with silhouettes. F-35Bs and Crowsnest Merlins share the deck with supplies, handling routes, maintenance clearances, cranes, and numerous tie-down points. A carrier can embark more aircraft when stores move aboard replenishment ships, but normal deployments may deliberately exchange maximum aircraft density for other cargo and easier maintenance. Geometric capacity estimates therefore routinely exceed a practical embarked air group.
