Carrier command and Glorious

A carrier-doctrine answer explains why larger converted battlecruiser carriers might have changed command arrangements and operating behavior.

Notes

The loss of HMS Glorious and the proposed conversion of larger ships open a discussion of institutional rank, doctrine, and command control. Larger carriers would more naturally become admiral-level task-force centers rather than ships sent on loosely supervised independent missions. British doctrine was already developing dedicated flag appointments for aircraft carriers, including rear admirals in the Mediterranean and Home Fleet. An admiral and staff would be more likely to insist on escorts, reconnaissance patrols, and coordination with nearby heavy forces.
