Carriers and Type 45 destroyers show how task-unit roles differ

A carrier contributes several aviation functions, while a Type 45 concentrates on fleet air defence with secondary helicopter-supported duties.

Notes

The carrier remains one task unit even though it performs several functions for the group. Its roles include strike aviation, air defence, airborne early warning, extra helicopters for anti-submarine warfare, and probably search and rescue. A Type 45 destroyer has a narrower primary task: stopping air attacks that penetrate the outer defensive line. Its helicopter can also support surface patrol and anti-submarine work. Ships with very different ranges of responsibility can occupy the same level in the organizational hierarchy.
