Carrier fighter effectiveness depended on the defensive system around the aircraft as well as the airframe. The Me 109T was capable but likely to be maintenance-sensitive under the strain of deck operations. The troubled Seafire cautions against judging a naval fighter from its basic performance alone. British Sea Gladiators, Skuas, Fulmars, and later aircraft operated within a radar-supported defensive system. By 1941, more radar and stronger carrier air groups changed the balance further.

Carrier air defence, radar, and the Me 109T
The Me 109T could be a capable fighter, but British radar, fighter direction, and growing carrier-aircraft strength shaped the wider air-defence contest.
