The Royal Navy began building its own 28-gun versions after operating captured French ships, then quickly enlarged their batteries to 32 and 36 guns. This was more than simple copying. British service often widened or otherwise altered French-derived designs to carry more supplies and endure long blockades and distant voyages. Capture thus provided both operational testing and design transfer.
