Why a captured French ship did not become a British copy

British and American examples show how different naval requirements can transform a design borrowed from another navy.

Question

Did Britain simply copy captured French warships when ordering new designs?

Short answer

Designers could retain desirable French characteristics while producing a different ship to meet British requirements.

Notes

A captured vessel could supply attractive hull lines without determining the whole British design. Thomas Slade still had to satisfy the Royal Navy's own requirements and decide which French characteristics he could retain. A contemporary comparison cites a reported fall in planned Constellation-class commonality with FREMM from 85 percent to 15 percent by this May 2024 talk. Different American requirements are offered as the reason for that redesign. Being based on an earlier ship therefore leaves considerable room for changes.
