Chapter · 2:45:21-2:52:35

Capitani Romani are cruisers in name, destroyers in role

With 41-knot speed, eight torpedo tubes, mine capacity, and negligible armor, the Capitani Romani were powerful large destroyers rather than conventional cruisers.

Notes

The class displaced under 4,000 tons standard and used 110,000 shaft horsepower to reach exceptional speed. Six-inch guns gave cruiser-caliber firepower, but protection was little more than splinter shielding and the conning tower had only 15 millimeters of armor. Scipione Africano's 1943 action against British motor torpedo boats shows how radar, speed, and rapid gunfire could make the concept effective against light attackers. Eight torpedo tubes and capacity for seventy mines better reveal the operational concept: fast flotilla leaders or minelayers able to strike and escape.
