Chapter · 14:14-19:18

A 41-knot hull built around guns, torpedoes, mines, and machinery

The design combined eight 135 mm guns, eight torpedo tubes, mine capacity, and 110,000 shaft horsepower with little armour but useful internal subdivision.

Notes

The class traded protection for a high-speed offensive fit and enough range to function as a fast cruiser. Eight 135 mm guns, eight 37 mm weapons, eight 20 mm weapons, eight torpedo tubes, and capacity for as many as seventy mines gave the hull several ways to attack surface and air threats. Four oil-fired boilers fed two geared steam turbines producing 110,000 shaft horsepower, while the stated endurance was 4,315 nautical miles at 18 knots. A complement of 418 and Gufo radar made this more than a bare speed experiment. Hits could still damage the thinly protected hull readily, but extensive subdivision helped the ships remain afloat and made their construction more resilient than the armour figures alone suggest.
