Cape Lopez ends in execution, servitude, and re-enslavement

The captured pirate crew meets sharply different fates, including execution, imprisonment, company servitude, acquittal through coercion claims, and the re-enslavement of Africans whom Roberts had freed.

Notes

Swallow's victory produced 272 prisoners and a legal aftermath as consequential as the battle. Fifty-four pirates were hanged, others received lesser punishments, and some went to Marshalsea Prison or became indentured servants of the Royal African Company. Dozens escaped punishment by arguing that they had been forced into pirate service, revealing the difficulty of separating coercion from participation aboard a captured vessel. The darkest outcome fell on sixty-five formerly enslaved Africans whom Roberts had emancipated: colonial authorities sold them back into slavery after their capture.
