A wartime repair ship served as a machine shop for decades

The former HMS Flamborough Head remained useful as HMCS Cape Breton's floating machine shop into the 1990s, showing the durable value of repair infrastructure.

Notes

The former HMS Flamborough Head left operational Canadian service as HMCS Cape Breton in 1964, but she remained a floating machine shop until the mid-to-late 1990s. Keeping the workshops useful required preserving some machinery and structure in working condition. Her condition suggests that she may have been reactivatable for the repair role through much of that period, though probably not by the late 1990s. She was later sold for use as an artificial reef. The long afterlife demonstrates the durable value of floating industrial capacity even after formal naval service ends.
