Why cancelled capital ships resist confident rankings

G3, N3, Lexington, Amagi, and similar cancelled designs never accumulated service evidence, so apparently precise comparisons rest on assumptions rather than observed performance.

Question

Why do people speak so confidently about how cancelled capital-ship designs such as G3, N3, Lexington, or Amagi would have performed?

Short answer

They should not; plans support informed estimates, but cancelled ships provide no service record against which to test them.

Notes

The combat qualities of cancelled interwar capital ships remain unknowable because the ships never entered service. Plans can reveal size, protection, and intended capability without showing construction defects, handling, reliability, or battle damage. The exceptionally dense N3 prompts a joke that it would have been a floating block of steel. Paper specifications still have to be kept separate from demonstrated performance.
