A two-tier frigate fleet for Canada

Canada could pair about 14 high-end Type 26s with 14 lighter, ice-adapted Type 31-like frigates instead of using first-rate escorts for every mission.

Question

How many Type 26 frigates does Canada need for presence missions?

Short answer

About 14 Type 26s plus roughly 14 lighter frigates would be more balanced and affordable than buying 21 high-end ships for every task.

Notes

Seven Type 26s per coast would provide at least two and often three or four available high-end ships. A second tier of lighter frigates would add presence and flexibility more economically than assigning first-rate anti-submarine escorts to every mission. The preferred option for Canadian waters is a Type 31-like design with Danish-derived ice-strengthening features, rather than the less self-sufficient French FDI. The existing Harry DeWolf-class patrol ships remain useful, though Canada will need more northern coverage in this assessment. Additional Arctic patrol capacity becomes more important as northern waters open and the area requiring surveillance expands.
