Canadian Tribals kept German destroyers from Normandy's supply lanes

The 10th Destroyer Flotilla's offensive sweeps protected the D-Day lodgement from surface attack and guarded the flow of men and supplies ashore.

Notes

Canada built a destroyer-centered navy in which Tribal-class ships supplied the heavy surface-combat element for escort groups. Their operations with the 10th Destroyer Flotilla helped create an offensive identity beyond convoy defense. German destroyers reaching the crowded invasion and supply traffic could have caused losses far beyond the ships immediately sunk. Destroyed cargoes and delayed deliveries would have disrupted the land campaign while the Normandy beachhead was still being consolidated. The Canadian Tribals therefore demonstrate how aggressive surface control can protect amphibious logistics and influence events ashore.
