Canada's balanced anti-submarine and area-air-defence escort

The Canadian Surface Combatant is framed as a general-purpose frigate: anti-submarine-focused but equipped with enough missile and radar capability for a limited area-defence role.

Notes

Canada needs a ship that can do more than one job because it is not pairing every frigate with a large destroyer force. Its SM-2-capable air-defence fit, with possible later SM-6 growth, contrasts with Britain's point-defence emphasis on Type 26. The Canadian ship can contribute limited area defence as well as anti-submarine warfare. The result is a balanced escort built to cover a wider share of Canadian fleet tasks rather than a pure air-defence vessel.
