Chapter · 24:27-27:07

Canada's two-ocean force-generation problem

Fifteen Canadian frigates divide into much smaller Atlantic and Pacific forces once geography, refit, repair, training, and commissioning are included.

Notes

Canada's planned fifteen Type 26-derived frigates first divide between two oceans, leaving roughly eight hulls in one fleet and seven in the other. Refit, repair, retraining, and commissioning then reduce how many can be used immediately, so the routine force in each theatre may be only two or three ships. Surge capacity improves the total for an emergency, but it does not erase the geographic split or readiness cycle. The example explains why nominal fleet size is not the same as sustainable operational strength and why Canada may demand more capability from each hull than a much larger navy would.
