The Grand Fleet's seaplane carrier missed the initial sailing signal and departed two hours and fifteen minutes late. Campania then tried to overtake the fleet but remained vulnerable while German submarines were reported nearby. Unlike Napier's decision to protect Engadine with destroyers, Grand Fleet command sent Campania home because she lacked an escort. Jellicoe therefore lost a second group of Short 184s and related reconnaissance aircraft at Jutland. The escort decision determined whether those aircraft reached the battle.
