Calypso at Heligoland and Zanzibar's diplomatic handover

Calypso's role in the Heligoland-Zanzibar transfer shows how Britain matched a protected corvette's carefully judged status to a consequential imperial ceremony.

Notes

The 1890 agreement gave Germany Heligoland, the Caprivi Strip, and a firmer position in East Africa while Germany recognized British authority in Zanzibar. Britain surrendered an island that later guarded the approaches to the Kiel Canal in exchange for influence it valued more highly in East Africa. The arrangement largely ignored the interests of the people whose territories the European powers traded. Its politics also fed German nationalist criticism when Bismarck attacked an agreement he had helped arrange and opponents portrayed the exchange as an empire traded for a button. Calypso carried out the Heligoland transfer ceremony and returned the island's last British governor. She was prestigious enough to mark the occasion, but less confrontational than sending one of the Royal Navy's most powerful armored ships.
