Buttercup moves from Belgian to Norwegian service

Buttercup's transfer after a Norwegian mine loss illustrates how Allied navies reused available escorts to replace casualties.

Notes

Buttercup was one of the two corvettes serving under the Free Belgian flag. The ship flew the Belgian flag from 1941 and remained in Belgian service until 1944. Norway then borrowed her to replace a Castle-class vessel lost to a mine off Finnmark. The Norwegian government acquired her permanently in 1946, extending the career of an escort that had already served another Allied navy.
